Secret Fax

I took Marty to work this morning because his CR-X threw it's timing belt. I dropped him off at his work and went to work myself.  Not a lot was going on. I P.T.'d, showered, checked out some tools and repaired a couple of 4" disc grinders. (their cords' insulation had been broken away and were unsafe to use) I was done at around 10am. I went back over to where Marty was working and hung out. It's a little operation in Mission Valley. They have lots of computers, and he is the only tech. He didn't have much to do; probably done in a ½ hour or so...

... Problems ...

So many small things kept popping up. First this, then that... we need this done, etc.

I decided around noon that I was bored. There was nothing I could help with, so I left and went to the mall. I walked around a bit, but it was a little too wierd to be there alone with nothing to buy.  So I left and went to Dave & Buster's. I still had about 100cr on my card. I played Fast-N-Furious (a re-skin of cruisin' usa), and Time Crisis 3. Got through 2nd level on TC3. =)

Now it's about 5pm and we're still trying to figure out how to get internet back. The previous tech left the company with a grudge and took all the passwords with him. We needed to make a change to the router, and without the password (or a workaround - which was fervently sought after ) the only way to make the changes is to RESET the router and start from scratch.

I eventually left to go to Taco Bell. This was going to take a while, we were goign to need fuel.

When I got back (around 8pm) the internet was finally working. Just a few more small things and we can go.

Marty worked on setting up his boss's laptop and the company router so that they would talk together while he's out of town on business. (the original reason we needed access to the router), and he asked me to verify the Data Fax system. Got to make sure that when you fax something from a regular fax machine to a data fax terminal, that it takes the image and puts it in the proper folder on the network.

So that's the explanation for the image at the top. It's 9:30pm and I'm in Mission Valley, and I've been faxing pages from the Victoria's Secret catalog to random fax numbers at this company that Marty is doing work for, and watching the network folder to see which numbers work. Sales is gonna be in for a suprise tomorrow morning!

He's almost done with the laptop/router thing. We've called in favors/tech support from Vissago, g8k33p3r, and several manufacturers today. Should be going home soon.

UPDATE: 9:45 He's done, we're leaving now.

They're gonna do it with this stuff called Polyvinyl Chloride. Yes, that's right... PVC!  Sounds familiar, right?

Invented in 1912 by German chemist, Fritz Klatte, and first Patented in the US by BF Goodrich in 1926, PVC has been around for a while.  It's been used for just about everything from medical supplies to children's toys. PVC pipes most likely bring the water you drink into your home.

a. What OTHER manufacturers besides Apple are using PVC in their headphone wires???
b. What are they going to do about it?
c. Why should they have to do anything about it?
d. Why is this such a big deal?

---------------------------------------------------

In a press release named, “A Greener Apple”, Steve Jobs outlined Apple’s eco-friendly strategy. Here are some of the key points:

Removing Toxic Chemicals

* Apple stopped using CRTs (lead containing screens and Monitors) in 2006

* Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of arsenic in all of its displays by the end of 2008

* Plans to reduce and eliminate the use of mercury by switching from fluorescent lamps to LED backlighting

* Plans to completely eliminate the use of PVC and BFRs in its products by the end of 2008.

Recycling (E-Waste)

* Apple recycled 13 million pounds of e-waste in 2006

* Predict by 2010 they will recycle 19 million pounds per year

* Free iPod recycling in the US (10 % discount to trade in old iPod)

* Apple products are designed using high quality materials that are in high demand from recyclers

---------------------------------------------------

Clearly, Apple is making efforts to clean up the toxins from the market.

I figured out how to fix it: DON'T EAT YOUR HEADPHONES !#$%^&*(!
Stuff like this makes me ashamed to be an American.
How long before common sense is outlawed. You've heard the phrase: "Common sense isn't all that common"? These policies and laws are what is making the people of America and elsewhere incapable of caring for themselves.

For the most part I'm going to be using Live Journal for my own purposes. I want to exercise my sometimes foggy memory,  see where I spend my time, and maybe even work on my writing skills. Feel free to watch though.

So , here it goes: Entry  numero uno:

I woke up at 0430 on the first alarm (I always set two alarms on my cell phone and a third on a travel clock in the bathroom). I took my shower, got dressed, had a red Dixie cup full of Grape Nuts and milk, and I was on my way. I downed a Monster Java  while driving. I shaved in the car too. FM94.9 was on the radio.

At work I checked my email, did some electrical safety checks on a Dremel and a ShopVac. I found and checked in several tools that weren't accounted for before. Then Barrett and I took two boxes of submarine battery flash arrestors over to 32nd Street and cleaned them in the ultrasonic sink.  Got a ticket for parking where I wasn't supposed to, but with a little looking, I found the cop that wrote it and convinced him that he should take back the ticket and not process it. I moved my car.

I came home, checked my email, talked with Pinguino for a while regarding a trip to Las Vegas.  I'm super excited.

The CalTrans County Supervisor stopped by my house. My dad asked him to. My driveway is messed up. Way too deep of a drainage channel. Everything scrapes going in and out. Right now I have about two dozen pieces of wood ranging from 2x4s to 4x6s and about a hundred bricks filling the hole. On one side I have lessened the depth of the dip by over a foot, and the minivan still scrapes. The County Supervisor said they should be out in about two weeks to work on it. They're going to fill it in and make it a much more gradual rise and a smaller dip. I'm so happy.

I went out in the front yard and cleaned, cut, swept, and washed away all the evidence of the Witch Creek fire from my front yard. I trimmed one of my bushes, pulled some dead branches from the trees, swept the walkways and driveway and sidewalk, sprayed them off with the hose too. Raked up all the leaves from the lawn and the planters. I drink another Monster Java. There's this huge gutter/canyon between my sidewalk and the street, and it was nearly full of debris, fallen branches, weeds, and trash. It is now only dirt. I decided that I'm going to grab a ton of ice plant and put it in there. maybe the rainy season will kill it, but I think there's a chance it'll survive. It'll make my house look a lot better, and hopefully it'll keep the rednecks from parking their trucks in the ditch. I have two new blisters. Both on my right middle finger. See? /me holds up his middle finger to show everyone.

It's completely dark at this point, but I figured I still needed to water. So I did.  I also washed the mailbox and the fence while I had the hose out. The house looks a LOT better. Even in the dark.

Came inside. Rebooted the computer. It never  wakes up. I need to disable hibernation. It's the second time today.

Created a LiveJournal account. Didn't add much content to my profile. I'll get to it later.

Stephen V Called me and requested my help. Someone's coming to buy one of his cars and he wanted help moving it around. Marty and I drove over. The car is a 1968 VW Notchback. the body was off of the frame. The six of us picked up the body off of one trailer and put it back on the pan a few feet away. We turned the rolling shell around and pushed it onto the trailer. We stayed and talked for a spell about cars. They were going to make a Bonneville Salt Flats race car out of this notchback. Cool. I brought up my 62 Galaxie and asked if we should make that a salt flats race car. The consensus  was no, but the guy we were talking to really liked Galaxies and said he might know someone who would buy it.

DInner's ready so we decided to head home. Texas Toast and Lasagna. It was good.

Now I'm writing my first LiveJournal entry while randomly switching to neatorama.com for entertainment.

I'm done now, and I don't think I forgot much.  It was a busy day.
